The Beginning of Suan Pakkad Palace Museum

Suan Pakkad Palace was once the residence of Major General H.R.H. Prince Chumbhotbongse Paribatra, Prince of Nagor Svarga, or the royal grandson of King Chulalongkorn (Rama 5) and M.R. Pantip Paribatra, Princess Consort.

The Palace was located on 6 rai (9,600 square meters) of the land on Sri Ayudhya Road. Originally, before becoming the residence of the two royalties during World War II, this land was a vegetable garden mainly Chinese cabbage garden. Hence, it was the origin of the name of this palace “Suan Pakkad Palace”, which means Chinese cabbage garden in Thai.

After the end of World War II, Prince and Princess Chumbhot brought 4 Traditional Thai houses, a family heirloom more than 100 years old, to be reassembled on Suan Pakkad Palace and decorated with priceless antiques and artifacts of various eras.

From this reason, Suan Pakkad Palace and the Thai houses had the opportunity to regularly welcome many state guests and distinguished visitors both Thai and foreigners. Thus, “Suan Pakkad Palace” at that time was not only the royal residence of the royalties but also a museum where the visitors can appreciate the collection of the Prince and Princess Chumbhot at the same time.

Later, when there were more collections, more Thai houses were built until there are 8 Thai houses as seen today. “Suan Pakkad Palace” has then become a museum that exhibit numerous antiques and artifacts. There are also interesting old Thai architectures with the same atmosphere as when the Prince and Princess Chumbhot were still living, and the museum has been opened to the public as it was 70 years ago.
