This prize naturally expands upon the most precious raison d’être of the movie critics at Cahiers since its creation in 1951: discovering a director, and contributing to their recognition and the continuation of their work.

Cahiers du cinéma n°103 - January 1960 (1960-01)Cahiers du cinéma

In Godard's film Breathless, a young woman asks Jean-Paul Belmondo, "You've got nothing against youth?" while showing a cover of Cahiers du cinéma. On the cover image of issue 103 of Cahiers du cinéma, from January 1960, we find an image from Breathless by Jean-Luc Godard.

This magazine, which was the birthplace of French New Wave cinema, has always put its faith in youth, committed to noticing and supporting all trends and creators bringing new blood into cinema.

It became clear that this prize had to bear the name of one of its founders, a leading figure of modern critique, and one of the most admired: André Bazin.
