The André Bazin Prize

Step into La Coupole, the famous Parisian brasserie where the André Bazin Prize award ceremony hosted by Cahiers du cinéma takes place.

Created in 2022, every year the André Bazin Prize recognizes a director of any nationality whose first feature-length movie was released in France that year.

This prize naturally expands upon the most precious raison d’être of the movie critics at Cahiers since its creation in 1951: discovering a director, and contributing to their recognition and the continuation of their work.

It became clear that this prize had to bear the name of one of its founders, a leading figure of modern critique, and one of the most admired: André Bazin.

Following pre-selection by the Cahiers editing team, a jury comprising a movie critic from the magazine, a director, an actor, a technician, and a cultural figure awards the André Bazin Prize each year.

This prize is awarded alongside a grant of €20,000 for the director. A vote is also given to one Cahiers subscriber. There is then a screening of the winning movie, accompanied by the magazine's editing team.

Created on Cahiers du cinéma's initiative, the André Bazin Prize is supported by French fashion house CHANEL and jewelry designer GOOSSENS, which created the trophy.

Awarded in 2022 for his feature-length fictional movie Hit the Road.

Awarded in 2023 for his feature-length fictional movie Inside the Yellow Cocoon Shell.

Awarded in 2024 for her feature-length fictional movie The Feeling That the Time for Doing Something Has Passed.
