The Tsubouchi Memorial Theatre Museum, Waseda University (ENPAKU) was built by Prof. IMAI, Kenji (School of Science & Engineering, Waseda Univ.) modeled on "Fortune Theatre" in 16th century England by the inspiration of Dr. TSUBOUCHI Shoyo.
The museum buiding itself is like a theatre
The stage is set in the overhang located in the center of the museum.
While the buildings on both wings overlooking the stage are also used as pier seats.

1st Floor Corridor
The overhang on the front stage serves as a stage, with entrances on both sides. The library reading room functions as a dressing room, while the two wings that surround the stage become box seats, and the plaza in front of the building serves as general seating.

On the first floor corridor, a model of the Fortune Theatre is exhibited, which is the model for the Theatre Museum, alongside a statue of Shakespeare.
At the top of the stage
You can see famous saying of Shakespeare that "Totus Mundus Agit Histrionem" written in Latin ("All the world is a stage.").

Celebrating 100 Years in 2028
The Theatre Museum was established in October 1928 with the support of various prominent figures to commemorate the 70th birthday of Dr. Tsubouchi Shoyo and the completion of his 40-volume translation of the Complete Works of Shakespeare, to which he devoted half his life. The museum will celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2028.

Its extensive collection of about one million works that has been amassed around 100 years may be termed as "the history of theatre" itself. Meanwhile it also contributes to researchers from a wide range of fields, extending beyond theatre.
