1. Anna Karina

Born in Denmark in 1940, Anna Karina was best known for her work with Jean-Luc Godard, who was also her partner, specifically her roles in Pierrot le fouVivre sa vieAlphaville, and another four of his movies. She played the title role in La Religieuse by Jacques Rivette, which caused a scandal in 1967. Karina was also a singer and directed two movies.

2. Jean-Pierre Léaud

Jean-Pierre Léaud played the unforgettable Antoine Doisnel for François Truffaut in Les 400 coups, and gave New Wave cinema a nervous, insolent, and deliberately theatrical face.

3. Catherine Deneuve

A real symbol of French culture, Catherine Deneuve acquired international fame with the success of Jacques Demy's The Umbrellas of Cherbourg. Some of her most famous movies include The Young Girls of RochefortBelle de jour, and Le Dernier Métro.

4. Jean-Paul Belmondo

In the 1960s, Jean-Paul Belmondo predominantly filmed with Jean-Luc Godard (À bout de souffle, Pierrot le fou) before moving toward more popular cinema in comedy or film noir, most notably in Philippe de Broca's movie (Le Magnifique).

5. Isabelle Huppert

Isabelle Huppert boasts one of cinema's most impressive and diverse filmographies. A tireless actress, she effortlessly navigates genres, from chilling (La Pianiste) to comical (Mon crime). A frequent collaborator with Claude Chabrol (eight films), she also served as Guest Editor-in-Chief for Cahiers du cinéma issue no. 477.

6. Alain Delon

A supporter of naturalistic rather than technical acting, Alain Delon embodied the idea of French glamor, particularly for his roles in Plein soleil and La piscine. He also had a brilliant Italian career, collaborating with Antonioni (L'Éclipse) and Visconti (Rocco and His Brothers, The Leopard).

7. Sandrine Bonnaire

In the movies À nos amours by Maurice Pialat, for which she received the César Award for Most Promising Actress, Sous le soleil de Satan, by the same director, and Sans toit ni loi by Agnès Varda, Sandrine Bonnaire was the face of spontaneous, impulsive, and stubbornly free youth in the 1980s.

8. Michel Piccoli

Also a theater actor trained at the Cours Simon theater school, Michel Piccoli is the unforgettable face of Paul Javal in Jean-Luc Godard's Le Mépris, but also one of the four main characters in the scandalous La Grande Bouffe by Marco Ferreri, who he made eight movies with.

9. Léa Seydoux

Léa Seydoux made a remarkable debut in La Belle Personne, as well as starring in La Vie d'Adèle by Abdellatif Kechiche, winner of the 2013 Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival. Léa Seydoux has become a regular in Hollywood, appearing in the James Bond saga and David Cronenberg's movies. However, she has not abandoned the French auteur cinema that propelled her to fame.

10. Mathieu Amalric

Mathieu Amalric rose to fame in the role of Paul Dedalus in Comment je me suis disputé...(ma vie sexuelle), which marked the beginning of a long collaboration with Arnaud Desplechin. He's also filmed with Otar Iosseliani, the Larrieu brothers, and Wes Anderson. Mathieu Amalric is also a director, his movie Barbara won him the Louis Delluc Prize in 2017.
