Ingmar Bergman's island

It was on the set of Through a Glass Darkly (1961) that Ingmar Bergman discovered the Swedish island of Fårö and its "raukars" (limestone sea stacks formed by erosion).

It was also in Närsholmen, on the neighboring island of Gotland, that Andreï Tarkovsky ignited the set of his last movie, The Sacrifice (1986). The house had to be completely rebuilt after a technical problem during the first take.

In a moving sequence shot, Alexander, the mystery arsonist, watches his house burn while being chased by Swedish firefighters.

The shores of Lake Albano

It was in Castel Gandolfo, in the Rome region, that one of the most heartbreaking endings in cinema was filmed for Nights of Cabiria (1957) by Federico Fellini.

Cabiria, after nearly being thrown off a cliff and deciding not to jump herself, ends up wandering through the woods bordering Lake Albano.

As it's getting late, she comes across a group of young people going home who surround her with their music — Ma la vita continua (Life Goes On) by Nino Rota— and Cabiria smiles through her tears, her gaze fixed on the audience.

The redwoods of Muir Woods National Monument

In one of the scenes in Alfred Hitchcock's Vertigo (1958), Scottie watches Madeleine trace her life on the rings of a redwood tree trunk with her finger at Muir Woods National Monument. This inspired another journey through time in La Jetée (The Pier, 1962) by Chris Marker.
