1. Past festivals: Festival du film maudit (Festival of Cursed Films)

Under the supervision of Jean Cocteau, the Objectif 49 society—of which André Bazin was a member—organized this legendary one-time festival in July 1949 in Biarritz, weaving the perspectives of a new critical approach to cinema and its practice into its agenda.

2. Past festivals: EXPRMTL

The Knokke-le-Zoute international experimental film festival (EXPRMTL)—the first of its kind—was only held five times in 1949, 1958 in Brussels, 1963, 1967, and 1974. At this true countercultural crossroads, Cahiers met Agnès Varda, Shirley Clarke, and Yayoi Kusama.

3. Cannes Film Festival

The Cannes Film Festival (planned in 1939 by Jean Zay's cabinet office and launched in 1946) is THE event in May. Parallel sections were gradually added to the official shortlist, including Critics' Week (1962), Directors' Fortnight (1968), and ACID (1993).

4. Venice Film Festival

Launched in 1932, the Venice Film Festival awards the Golden Lion for best movie at the beginning of September. The festival has seen many critical clashes, particularly at the 1954 event when the competition consisted of Senso (Sense) by Luchino Visconti and La Strada (The Road) by Federico Fellini.

5. Berlin International Film Festival

Every February, the Berlin International Film Festival (Berlinale) awards the Golden Bear and the Silver Bear to the winners of the official competition. There are seven other shortlists including Encounters, Panorama, Berlinale Special and Shorts, Forum, Generation, and Berlinale Classics.

6. Festival of 3 Continents

The Festival of 3 Continents was created in Nantes in 1979 to honor Latin American, African, and Asian cinema, which wasn't popular in the West and was under-represented at festivals.

Bonus 1. BUSAN International Film Festival

Since its launch in 1996, the Busan International Film Festival in South Korea has become an unmissable global event. Several shortlists dedicated to Asian cinema have brought moviemakers such as Jia Zhangke, Kim Ki-duk, and Hong Sang-soo to the forefront.

Bonus 2. FESPACO

The Panafrican Film and Television Festival of Ouagadougou (FESPACO) launched in 1969 and takes place every two years, with an agenda and conferences based on a current theme for African cinema. Souleymane Cissé, Brahim Tsaki, and Med Hondo have received awards on several occasions.
