Meet the actresses
Cahiers du cinéma has always given pride of place to female actors on its cover, as well as offered them a space for expression in the numerous interviews published in the magazine. Spotlight on five French cinema icons.
Born in Denmark in 1940, Anna Karina was best known for her work with Jean-Luc Godard, who was also her partner, specifically her roles in Pierrot le fou, Vivre sa vie, Alphaville, and another four of his movies.
She played the title role in La Religieuse (The Nun) by Jacques Rivette, which caused a scandal in 1967. Karina was also a singer and directed two movies, Vivre ensemble (1973) and Victoria (2008).

A real symbol of French culture, Catherine Deneuve acquired international fame with the success of Jacques Demy's The Umbrellas of Cherbourg (1964).
Some of her most famous movies include The Young Girls of Rochefort (1967), Belle de jour (1967), and Le Dernier Métro (The Last Metro, 1980). She played the role Marie Leblanc in Les Voleurs (Thieves, 1966) by André Téchiné.
Isabelle Huppert's filmography is among the most impressive in the history of cinema, being both international and diverse. A tireless actor, she can switch effortlessly between registers, sometimes chilling (The Piano Teacher, 2001), sometimes comical (Mon crime [The Crime Is Mine, 2023]).
Isabelle Huppert was a regular in Claude Chabrol's movies. She was in Une affaire de femmes (Story of Women, 1988), one of eight movies they made together. She was also Guest Editor-in-Chief of issue no. 477 of Cahiers du cinéma.
In the movies À nos amours by Maurice Pialat (To Our Loves, 1983), for which she received the César Award for Most Promising Actress, Sous le soleil de Satan (Under the Sun of Satan, 1987) by the same director, and Sans toit ni loi (Vagabond, 1985)) by Agnès Varda, Sandrine Bonnaire was the face of spontaneous, impulsive, and stubbornly free youth in the 1980s.

Sandrine Bonnaire played the title role in Joan the Maid by Jacques Rivette. She kept and published a journal that recounts this adventure: Le Roman d'un tournage (A Novel About a Film Shoot), Éditions Jean-Claude Lattès publishing house, 1994.

Léa Seydoux made a remarkable debut in La Belle Personne (The Beautiful Person), as well as starring in La Vie d'Adèle (Blue Is the Warmest Color) by Abdellatif Kechiche, winner of the 2013 Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival. However, the actress ended her collaboration with the moviemaker due to filming conditions that she claimed were sometimes difficult and violent.
Léa Seydoux has become a regular in Hollywood, appearing in the James Bond saga and David Cronenberg's movies. However, she has not abandoned the French auteur cinema that propelled her to fame, filming with Bruno Dumont, Bertrand Bonello, and Arnaud Desplechin.

"It may be the case that my partner didn't really hear what I just said. And that's disturbing, because acting simply involves listening to your environment. So we come back to this idea; acting is a mixture of listening and thinking." Issue no. 779.
